Feeding Guide and Tips

Not sure how much Hungry Hound to feed?

Start here.

We know your own life is expensive and a lot of people have to tighten their belts these days.
But even if a full Hungry Hound diet isn’t realistic right now, you can still get your pups the benefits they deserve by using it part-time or as a topper.
You’ll find some budget-friendly ways to feed Hungry Hound below, before we dive into the full feeding chart.

Hungry Hound food bags come in 2 sizes, 1/2 lb and 1 lb

The below guide uses ‘1 bag’ as the 1lb bag, so you can calculate your pup’s needs accordingly.

Feeding Hungry Hound on a Budget

If you love what Hungry Hound does for your dog but can’t afford 100% Hungry Hound right now, here are realistic ways to still use it:

1. Half-and-half bowl (50% Hungry Hound, 50% kibble)
Use Hungry Hound for half of each meal and keep your existing food for the other half.
You still get fresher ingredients and better moisture, at about half the cost of a full Hungry Hound diet.

2. One Hungry Hound meal per day
Feed your regular food in the morning and Hungry Hound at night (or vice versa).
That gives your dog one fresh meal a day without doubling your food budget.

3. Hungry Hound as a daily topper (25% of the bowl)
Use a smaller amount (about ¼ of the daily food) as a topper over your dog’s current food.
Great for picky eaters, sensitive tummies, or adding extra nutrients and moisture.

4. Focus on the dog that needs it most
If you have multiple dogs, you can prioritize Hungry Hound for the dog that:

  • Has the most sensitive stomach or skin

  • Is older and needs extra support

  • Is pickier and needs a big upgrade in palatability

5. Rotate days
Use Hungry Hound 3–4 days a week instead of every day.
It stretches your order further while still giving your dog regular fresh-food days.

You can use all the feeding percentages and weight ranges below even if you’re just doing 25–50% Hungry Hound—just calculate the total daily amount, then feed only a portion of that as Hungry Hound and the rest as your current food.

The Ideal (Full Hungry Hound) Feeding Plan

Every dog is different, but a great starting point is:

  • Adult dogs: 2–3% of ideal body weight per day (repeated throughout this page)

  • Puppies & adolescents: 4–6% of current body weight per day (repeated throughout this page)

From there, adjust up or down based on your dog’s body condition, energy, and stool quality.

Adult Feeding Guide by Size

These amounts are starting points for healthy adult dogs. Always use your dog’s ideal body weight, not just what the scale says today.

Dogs Under 25 lb

Smaller dogs usually do best toward the higher end of the range (closer to 3% of body weight per day).

Rule of thumb: 2.5–3% of body weight per day.

  • 10 lb dog
    – 0.2–0.3 lb per day
    – ≈ ¼–⅓ of a 1 lb bag per day

  • 15 lb dog
    – 0.3–0.45 lb per day
    – ≈ ⅓–½ bag per day

  • 20 lb dog
    – 0.4–0.6 lb per day
    – ≈ ½–⅔ bag per day

If your under-25-lb dog is very active or naturally lean, stay closer to the higher number.

Dogs 25–40 lb

Rule of thumb: 2–2.75% of body weight per day.

  • 25 lb dog
    – 0.5–0.75 lb per day
    – ≈ ½–¾ bag per day

  • 30 lb dog
    – 0.6–0.9 lb per day
    – ≈ ⅔–1 bag per day

  • 35 lb dog
    – 0.7–1.05 lb per day
    – ≈ ¾–1 bag per day

  • 40 lb dog
    – 0.8–1.2 lb per day
    – ≈ ¾–1¼ bags per day

Average pet on normal walks? Start around 2.25–2.5% and adjust from there.

Dogs 40–70 lb

Rule of thumb: 2–2.5% of body weight per day.

  • 40 lb dog
    – 0.8–1.2 lb per day
    – ≈ ¾–1¼ bags per day

  • 50 lb dog
    – 1.0–1.5 lb per day
    – ≈ 1–1½ bags per day

  • 60 lb dog
    – 1.2–1.8 lb per day
    – ≈ 1¼–1¾ bags per day

  • 70 lb dog
    – 1.4–2.1 lb per day
    – ≈ 1½–2 bags per day

Couch potato? Stay closer to 2%. Trail runner or working dog? You may need closer to 2.5–3%.

Dogs 70–100 lb

Big dogs often do well at about 2% to start, then you adjust based on activity and metabolism.

Rule of thumb: 2–2.25% of body weight per day.

  • 70 lb dog
    – 1.4–2.1 lb per day
    – ≈ 1½–2 bags per day

  • 80 lb dog
    – 1.6–2.4 lb per day
    – ≈ 1¾–2½ bags per day

  • 90 lb dog
    – 1.8–2.7 lb per day
    – ≈ 2–2¾ bags per day

  • 100 lb dog
    – 2.0–3.0 lb per day
    – ≈ 2–3 bags per day

For most 70–100 lb dogs, starting at 2% and tweaking from there works well.

Dogs 100+ lb

Giant dogs can be very individual. We still use 2–3% of ideal body weight, but most do best near the lower/middle of that range.

Rule of thumb: 2–2.25% to start, then adjust.

  • 100 lb dog
    – 2.0–3.0 lb per day
    – ≈ 2–3 bags per day

  • 120 lb dog
    – 2.4–3.6 lb per day
    – ≈ 2½–3½ bags per day

  • 140 lb dog
    – 2.8–4.2 lb per day
    – ≈ 3–4+ bags per day

For 100+ lb dogs, we strongly recommend customizing a plan with us (see contact info below).

Puppies & Young Dogs

Puppies are growing and burn more calories, so they need a higher percentage of their body weight.

General puppy guideline (total per day):

  • 8–16 weeks: about 6% of body weight

  • 4–6 months: about 5% of body weight

  • 6–12 months: about 4% of body weight

  • Large/giant breeds: Use the lower end of the range to avoid growing too fast

Example:
20 lb, 5-month-old puppy
20 lb × 5% = 1 lb per day
→ about 1 Hungry Hound 1 lb bag per day, split into 2–3 meals.

Re-check your puppy’s weight every 2–4 weeks and adjust the amount as they grow.

Transitioning to Hungry Hound

To avoid tummy upset, switch gradually:

  • Days 1–3: 75% old food, 25% Hungry Hound

  • Days 4–6: 50% old food, 50% Hungry Hound

  • Days 7–10: 25% old food, 75% Hungry Hound

  • Day 11+: 100% Hungry Hound (if your dog is doing well)

If stools get too soft, slow down and stay at each step a couple of extra days.

Mixing Hungry Hound with Kibble

You can absolutely do a “half and half” plan.

  1. Use the guide above to find your dog’s total daily amount.

  2. Decide what percent will be Hungry Hound (for example, 50%).

  3. Feed that portion as Hungry Hound and the rest as your current food.

Example:
40 lb adult at 2.5%
40 lb × 2.5% = 1 lb total food/day

If you want 50% Hungry Hound:

  • ½ lb Hungry Hound per day

  • ½ lb equivalent in your kibble (per kibble instructions)

How to Know If You’re Feeding the Right Amount

Use your dog’s body instead of just the bowl.

Signs the amount is about right:

  • You can feel ribs easily, but you can’t see all of them

  • From above, there’s a visible waist

  • From the side, there’s a tuck-up behind the ribs

  • Stools are well-formed (not too hard, not too runny)

  • Good, steady energy

If your dog is gaining weight or looks heavy:

  • Decrease the daily amount by 10–15%

  • Re-check in about 2 weeks

If your dog is too thin or seems constantly hungry:

  • Increase the daily amount by 10–15%

  • Re-check body condition and energy in about 2 weeks

Practical Feeding Tips

  • Use a kitchen scale. It’s more accurate than eyeballing cups.

  • Split into two meals. Most dogs do best with morning and evening meals.

  • Stick to a routine. Same times each day help digestion and behavior.

  • Always offer fresh water. Especially important on higher-protein diets.

  • Change amounts slowly. Any big change in food or calories should happen over a few days.

  • Watch the poop. It’s one of the best indicators of how your dog is handling the food.

Storage & Handling

  • Keep Hungry Hound meals frozen until you’re ready to use them.

  • Thaw in the refrigerator for 12–24 hours.

  • Use thawed meals within 2–3 days.

  • Don’t leave raw food sitting out for more than 30–60 minutes.

  • Wash hands, bowls, and surfaces after handling raw food.
